What is dulse? And how should I use it?

Dulse is loved by chefs, vegans and health food-enthusiasts alike. But what is dulse? And how should you use it if you want to reap its many benefits as part of your mission to eat better? We break it down for you and inspire you with some recipe ideas too!

What is dulse?

Dulse is a nutritious algae, also known as Palmaria palmata. It originates under water and grows attached to rocks. Our dulse is sourced from the fresh, cold waters of the North Atlantic ocean in equal parts from France, Spain, Scotland and Ireland making it the best in the world in terms of depth of flavour and denseness of nutrients.

What nutrients can be found in dulse?

The list is almost endless! Here are a few of our favourites:

Protein - Great as a post-workout snack, the proteins found in dulse can assist with muscle repair following exercise. Great for those wanting to diversify their protein intake and rely less on animal derived products.

Vitamin B12 - Usually found in animal products, B12 is vital to keeping the body healthy and dulse is a great source of this amazing vitamin. Ideal for vegans and those looking to eat more of a plant-based diet to keep up those B12 levels, giving the body more energy.

Iron & Calcium - Two important minerals for healthy bodily function.

Fibre - Compared to seaweed, dulse contains more fibre. Ideal if you're looking to increase your fibre intake and diversify your sources.

This amazing superfood has also been cited to calm inflammation, help with eczema, assist in removing heavy metals from the body and even improve vision. No wonder it's one of our most popular products!

How should I use dulse?

Dulse is rich in both nutrients and flavour. It's salty, smoky flavour makes it ideal as a seasoning when dried and ground, or you can even eat it fresh in fish or pasta dishes. We like to add to soups, Buddha bowls, and seafood dishes. Here are some of our favourite dulse recipes:
